Chanel Summer Internship Review

Chanel Summer Internship Review

Internships are a very integral part of the college experience. They not only allow you to test out different aspects of your chosen career path, but they also give you a chance to gain knowledge and contacts that will help you in the future. When I started college, I was determined to find the perfect internship, but what I learned over the course of searching, was that there are so many

College students like me want to find out what different internships are all about. So here I am starting the Internship Insights series with fellow blogger, Sandra Semaan of

CHANEL

S: Thank you ! I just graduated from Baruch College, a business school on the lower east side, and majored in entrepreneurship with a minor in sociology.

Buying Someone A Vintage Chanel? Here's What You Need To Know.

S: My interest in fashion began at a time where I was rebuilding myself. I was going through a tough time when I first started college in the sense that I couldn’t figure out who I was and what I wanted to do in life. In the meantime, I started shopping more and I realized how much I loved clothes and literally how happy they’d make me. Basically, little by little I realized that fashion was just a true passion of mine. So I just decided to go for it!

C: You already have a couple of internships under your belt, could you tell me where you’ve interned and what your role was at each place?

S: I started interning in April 2013. My first internship was at a showroom called Commune Showroom. As an intern, I made appointments and assisted at them between the sales manager and buyers/owners of boutiques. I went on a lot of road appointments to assist my supervisor as well. Then, that summer, I started interning for celebrity stylist, Michael Fisher. Interning for him consisted of checking in and out all the clothes and accessories that came in the studio. I helped prep for photo shoots which I sometimes assisted on as well. Finally, I interned at Harper’s Bazaar during the fall semester of 2013; my last semester as an undergrad student. There, I worked in the fashion closet in the accessories department.

S: As of now I’m back at Michael Fisher’s studio helping him and his assistant out anyway I can while I job hunt.

S: My average day consists of checking in/checking out anything that goes through the studio. Prepping for photo shoots is also a huge part of the job. And besides that, a lot of miscellaneous tasks are done.

S: I think going on some of the photo shoots I’ve been on has been the most fun in any of my internships. Having such hands on experience is definitely something I appreciate.

How To Get An Entry Level Fashion Job Or Internship In Paris

S: Besides obviously being around clothes all day, what I love most about working in the fashion industry is just how crazy busy it can get. I’m a bit of a workaholic so it makes me feel good to be busy in a field that I love.

C: There has been a lot of controversy recently having to do with the mistreatment of interns at some very prestigious places, do you have anything to say on the subject? When do you think employers have “crossed the line” with their interns? If you don’t feel comfortable speaking on the subject, could you share how you think your internships will help you find a job?

S: This must possibly be my favorite question. However, I’d rather not answer it because I don’t want to say anything I might regret. All I have to say is, and I guess this ties into the next question about how internships will help me find a job, is that internships are essential in terms of learning about the different aspects of the fashion industry. For me personally, I didn’t go to fashion school, so I took my internships as my own personal classrooms. This helps me find a job because I obviously get to gain experience and knowledge about the industry which will help build my resume and confidence when I apply to jobs and go on interviews. However, a piece of advice I’d like to give is not to let yourself be taken advantage of in any internship or job. Don’t settle for a position that doesn’t uplift you in any way.

C: Whew! That was a serious one! Let’s move on to the fun part…What do you usually wear to work? Any advice to those who have never had an internship before and need outfit tips?

S: I like to go for fashionable yet comfy/casual clothing because internships are a lot of work. As an intern, you rarely sit behind a desk. In fact, you’re asked to go on runs or errands quite often so my biggest tip would be to wear comfortable shoes. Heels are great and all, but really impractical. As an intern, I’m basically on my feet for hours so I stick to flats (or boots in the winter time).

S: To be honest, I still don’t know what my dream job would be. But I am working on finding out 🙂

S: The man I end up with. Hahaha, jokes. Mmm I’d have to go for Alexa Chung or Miranda Kerr because I love their sense of style so I’d die to see it live.

S: Again, Alexa Chung and Miranda Kerr are both women I consider as fashion icons. I’d also include Kourtney Kardashian, Jessica Alba, and Audrey Hepburn.

S: I just really wanted to start one for fun. To this day I only have it for the pleasure of having one. I love to have random photo shoots and post up outfits I’ve styled.
