“I’m incredibly excited to see the Australian Fortnite community come together for this amazing event. The 2019 AO event was an incredible time, and the inclusion of so many international talent this year should make the 2020 event even more special, ” Elliot ‘Muselk’ Watkins, said.
Brisbane Lions midfielder Mitch Robinson will team up with Chiefs Esports Club compatriot Slaya and Perth YouTuber Mau whilst LazarBeam, comedian Dave Hughes and Renegades’ newly signed pro player Rel have combined to create what some have called the powerhouse team of the tournament.
“From playing in front of 95, 000 at the MCG, I never thought I'd play a video game on Margaret Court Arena during the Australian Open. Fortnite Esports came to Australia this weekend with the Summer Smash. The event featured a $500, 000 solo event which marked the largest Esports prize pool in Australian History.

The solo series kicked off as Renegades pro Jesse X2Twins Jesse Eckley set himself apart from the rest of the field. Essentially, he won the whole tournament in the first three games by securing three Victory Royales in a row.

His strategy was obvious from the start - go for placements over kills. X2Twins Jesse won his first two games without even getting a kill. The final standings for the solo event looked like this:
There was a Pro-Am event following the solo tournament, but most of the American fans were asleep at this point. Renegades completed their clean sweep of the competition when MrFreshAsian secured the $50, 000 charity prise. Jesse's brother, X2Twins Jordan, also showed out in the Pro-Am

Fortnite Ao Summer Smash Recap & Results
It's good to see Fortnite Esports coming to a new audience, but there were certainly some problems throughout the broadcast. The audio was bugged at certain points, and spectator mode left a lot to be desired.
The spectator mode in Fortnite is still under development, and it's far from perfect. The health bars weren't accurate through the first stage of nearly every game, removing some of the intrigue going into each fight.

There was also a ton of downtime during the event. It felt like there was a half hour between every match, which lead to the solo event lasting nearly five hours.
Fortnite Duos Revealed For Ao Summer Smash
This wasn't the most entertaining or bug-free Fortnite Esports event we've seen, but it's still a work in progress. Next up is the ESL Katowice Royale in Poland.
