Summer Internship: Getting To The Heart Of The Matter

The MGH Aspire Works Internship Program is a unique program designed specifically for adults on the autism spectrum, or a related Asperger profile, to gain real-world work experience.

The Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMFS) One-Year Preliminary Internship is for a dental school graduate. Interns will assist in outpatient clinics and perform simple procedures and gain experience with bone grafts, lacerations and more. This is a non-categorical position.

The Brigham’s Office of Strategic Communication is looking for a science writing intern to join the team for the summer or for the fall or spring semester. Through this internship, the intern will work directly with and support the senior science communication specialist (or a designated team member) to find, assess and write stories about cutting-edge Brigham research and innovation.

Summer Internship Programme

This internship offers medical students who are interested in orthopedics and women’s sports medicine an opportunity to spend their summer participating in clinical research and job shadowing in orthopedics. The goals of the internship are to provide clinical research experience and diverse shadowing opportunities in a clinical environment. Our clinical research focuses on sports-related injuries, treatments, surgical and non-surgical outcomes, and sex differences in musculoskeletal medicine.This intensive 8 week laboratory-based biological research program is for undergraduates during the summer following their sophomore or junior years. Up to 6 internships are awarded by a competitive process. The internship culminates with a Poster Session during the final week where the interns present data in regards to the project they have been working on during the summer.

Program Overview The program goal is to expose college science students (who will be juniors or seniors in the fall of 2023) to the rewards of laboratory research directed toward solving important public health problems. The overall mission of our program is to recruit qualified students for graduate-level training leading to research careers in the biological sciences. Interns apply state-of-the art technology in their own research projects under the direction of a Harvard faculty member. Research projects focus on biological science questions that are important to the prevention of disease. Disease areas include infections (tuberculosis, malaria, Chagas disease), cancer, lung diseases, multifactorial, multigenic and common diseases of aging, diabetes, obesity, etc.  Scientific approaches include regulation of cell growth and gene regulation, cellular metabolism, DNA modification, cellular signaling, structure-function analyses, etc.

Financial support over the course of 8 weeks includes a stipend of $3, 600, a travel allowance of up to $500 and free dormitory housing.

Misc.

The Harvard Griffin GSAS Research Scholar Initiative is a non-degree granting post-baccalaureate program that provides mentored research and training for individuals interested in pursuing doctoral studies. In the program, research scholars work with a Harvard faculty member as a research assistant, participate in professional development seminars, and receive GRE preparation support. In addition, scholars may take undergraduate and/or graduate coursework in preparation for doctoral studies.

Top 20 Internships In Healthcare Management

Past Summer Intern participants,  Erika Espinosa and Aidaliz Llorens, present their summer project posters at the 2014 ABRCMS, one of the largest professional conferences for underrepresented minority students and students with disabilities.The internship and volunteer placement with the Autism Program at Boston Medical Center provides undergraduate and graduate level students the opportunity to participate in a rich applied hospital based placement supporting children and families. The program relies heavily on the support, creativity, and drive of student interns and volunteers in various capacities based on the program and individual student’s needs. The student intern or volunteer works with Autism Program staff in executing many aspects and components of our work, as identified in the project descriptions below. Interns and volunteers also have the opportunity to observe diagnostic and follow-up clinic appointments with Developmental and Behavioral Pediatric clinicians, as well as participate in a plethora of training opportunities.

Applications are reviewed 2-3 months prior to the start of the placement (March-Summer, May-Fall, and November-Spring). Once applications are reviewed, chosen candidates will be invited to participate in an individual or group interview as an opportunity to share relevant experience and skills, as well as ask questions. Anywhere from 3-10 interns/volunteers are on-boarded each placement cycle. 

While we always love to hear about any personal or professional experiences you have working with individuals with ASD, this is not a requirement.

We try to build in at least one clinical shadowing opportunity throughout your time with our program, though depending on the projects and responsibilities you have throughout your placement there may be other occasions to observe in clinic. 

Our internship placements are rich and dynamic, such that each intern’s experience is unique to their interest and the skills they bring forth to the program. There are often tasks and projects that provide interns the opportunity to interact directly with families. Please note, however, that our program does not provide direct therapeutic services to individuals.
