, Marmite on toast and opaque tights have in common? The answer is that nobody seems able to agree on whether they are very good or very bad.
For some women, black tights are one of fashion’s greatest inventions. They pull on the thick stretchy material with joy, able to wear a short skirt without baring any flesh, which is particularly important during the colder months. For others, they are the blight of any outfit – endlessly drooping at the crotch or laddering at the first whiff of a broken nail. For years, fashion sided with the tights-phobes, and even at the notoriously freezing February shows, editors battled through New York snow drifts in bare legs because pulling on a pair of opaques was one fashion faux pas too far.

But with the return of the miniskirt, we are seeing the return of tights as a fashionable item. Even Vogue agrees. And I for one couldn’t be more delighted, particularly because in the last decade, a range of new tights brands have been launched that are ladder resistant, that suit all skin tones and body shapes, and that sit in the flattering middle-ground between too sheer and too thick.

My own tights rules aren't extensive. I try to avoid opaques from April to October no matter what the weather outside, and always wear anything lacy or fishnet-like with flat shoes or boots. I love my sheer black animal print tights but I personally wouldn’t wear them in actual leopard shades, and that goes for most of my tights - black floral tights are lovely but inject them with colour and they might veer towards a kookier art-teacher worthy style that isn't my own. Other than that, the tights world is your oyster: wear them with short hemlines, long hemlines, with velvet skirts or silk dresses, and pointy flats or biker boots.
As tights make a return to the fashion fore, I am also reminded of how certain combinations are particularly pretty – here, the best clothes and tights mixes to know now...
Kate Moss and Sienna Miller have been pairing their minis with black tights for decades – and that silhouette will never not make me think of models marching around 1960s Chelsea in Mary Quant’s thigh-baring designs. Opaques and minis are the perfect fashion combination: 100 denier tights speak of cosiness and comfort, while miniskirts are fun, frothy and slightly daring. Together, they allow women of all ages to wear mid-thigh designs with confidence, and, crucially, without resorting to the tanning mitt.
How To Wear Leggings In Summer
In terms of the tights themselves, opting for better quality products does pay off (and I include M&S in that - their Autograph seamless opaques will last for years). If you’re prepared to pay a bit more, Falke has a few semi sheer designs that sit on just the right side of shiny, will stay ladder-free for years and will flatter your legs. Kim Kardashian’s brand Skims also has a range of full-support black tights up to a size 24 that will make even the most miniskirt-averse women reach for this season’s shorter hemlines.
Cheap (well, some of them) and easy to order online, patterned tights provide an instant update to any outfit, and are the ideal way of jazzing up the mid-calf skirt and jumper aesthetic so many of us are wedded to. New brands such as Heist (I love their Lady Garden design) and Calzedonia have delightful options peppered with florals, hearts, letters and logos, which look particularly pretty when peeping out of a longer skirt with a pair of flats.
The beauty of decorated tights is that they make any outfit look fun without much effort at all. Most of them cost less than a bottle of wine from the supermarket and can be worn with almost any skirt or dress provided the material itself is reasonably plain. What’s not to love?
How To Style It: Summer Outfits With Leggings
All my Christmas parties were cancelled by Omicron, but had they been on, I would have worn a pair of party tights with a simple dress and let my legs do the talking. What are party tights, you ask? Look no further than Wolford, which offers lace-adorned stockings and rhinestone-flecked tights that are guaranteed to suck up all the attention. Although to my mind, the best party tights are ones that won’t ladder mid-way through a champagne toast or a rendition of ‘Happy Birthday’. Enter Hedoine’s 20 denier ladder-resistant tights that will last you at least three party seasons.
The designer party tights offering, meanwhile, is as dazzling as it is eye-wateringly expensive. Gucci, for example, has a pair of tights embellished with sparkling crystals to form the GG motif that cost £750. They’re dramatically beautiful, yes, and an Instagram statement, and yet I suspect wearing them to a party would lead to the very un-hedonistic desire to sit alone in a padded room for fear of ruining them. There are few things more versatile than a pair of black leggings. Dress them up, dress them down, wear them to work, or wear them to the gym, even wear them on a date, then to brunch the next day!
