What To Pack For Italy In The Summer

One place I’ve always wanted to visit is Italy. And now the time has finally arrived and we are taking the girls with us. So today’s post is all about what I’m packing for Italy in the summer.

Italy, specifically Rome and Venice, has long been on my travel bucket list.  Technically, I have been to Italy once when we went to Portofino many years ago at the end of a trip to France.  However, we were only there 2 days so it hardly counts.  We were supposed to go to Rome and the Amalfi Coast a few years ago for our 20th anniversary and then changed to the Maldives.

Wanderlust

We will be visiting Rome, Florence and Venice.  If you have tips, I’d love them!  There are times I plan ahead and times I don’t.  We only booked this a few weeks ago and I’m flying by the seat of my pants but gathering all the info I can from friends and the web.  Please leave me a comment below with your best travel tips, shopping recommendations and restaurant suggestions.

The weather is going to be 90s to high 60s.  We are excited to get a 10-20 degree break from this Texas heatwave!  I’m bringing this travel dress for the plane that feels put together but is so comfortable to wear.

I’ve packed light dresses like this and this for day, pretty frocks like this and this for dinner.  I know we’ll have a few really warm days in Rome so a great white T and cute skirt or cute T-shirt dresses will be perfect.

As for shoes, I’m a sandal girl so I’m bringing these and these. Someone told me rubble soles were better than leather so we’ll see! I’ll also bring a comfortable pair of sneakers but not sure I’ll wear them much. If my feet are hot, I’m hot.

This is my go-to bag for traveling especially with my family.  It is large enough for wallet, phone, guide book (love these!), rain jacket, and more.  But small enough to still be stylish.  I love the crossbody strap.  I’m also bringing a small crossbody that can double as a bag for night. I’m sure I’ll pop this in at the last minute!

The Ultimate Italian Packing Guide For Summer {2024}

Italy is one of the most popular summer vacation destinations in Europe, and for good reason. Even though it can get scorching hot there’s something about gelatos and Vespas and pizza that make it a magical travel destination.

Italian women have earned a reputation for looking well put together. No matter the weather you can count on them to step out the door looking effortlessly presentable. It is no secret that Italians like the idea of “

” which literally translates to “the beautiful figure.” It specifically means to dress well to make a good impression. You don’t need to be fancy, but some effort is required.

What To Wear In Italy By Season (2024)

Follow my 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 packing method to avoid overpacking. Whether you’re travelling for one week or four you can build the perfect Italian capsule wardrobe. The general key is five tops, four bottoms, three dresses, three shoes, two bags, two jackets. Feel free to play around with these ratios.

It’s often one of my goals to dress like locals and not stand out as a tourist. So it’s with this in mind that I put together my capsule wardrobe for Italy in summer. Whether you’re visiting Rome, Venice, Positano, or Florence you’ll be comfortable and stylish.

What To Pack For Italy In July: Complete Italy Packing List For All Ages

In general, you’ll want lightweight summer dresses, something modest (covered shoulders and knees) for religious sites, versatile basics, and swimwear. If you have that covered the rest is a bonus.

You may think dresses are too formal but they’re a favourite travel packing hack of mine. Just one item and you’re ready to go. Plus, you can dress them up or down depending on your activity. Throw on sneakers and a ball cap and you’re ready for the day. Swap out your jewellery, put on some heels, and a classic red lip and you’re ready for a glass of wine and an aperitivo.

What

If you plan on visiting religious sites like cathedrals or churches while in Italy it’s best to pack something that covers your shoulders and knees. A lightweight scarf over a midi-dress will work or a linen shirt with some wide-legged cropped pants are great options. While a dress code isn’t strictly enforced in many of these places, it’s a sign of respect even if you aren’t religious yourself. The Vatican is one place that will require covered shoulders and knees. If you enter the Sistine Chapel with your shoulders exposed, you will be forced by the Chapel guards to wear a pretty sad-looking disposable cover-up that looks a bit like a hospital gown. Best to plan ahead and avoid that fashion disaster.

I love wearing an oversized button up shirt as a beach cover-up. When an item of clothing can be worn multiple ways it earns a spot in my suitcase. To keep your swimwear looking more upscale, go with solids. Texture is big this year so look for ribbed material. A wide-brimmed straw hat and great sunnies are an absolute must. Pair is with a woven tote for a complete look whether you’re boating on Lake Como or boating the Amalfi Coast.

I normally advocate for just three pairs of shoes on my travel packing guides but I just couldn’t help myself on this one. Besides sneakers for long walks in cities and a classic flat sandal for small town exploring I’ve included a pair of low heeled sandals for evening wear and a pair of white EVA Birkenstocks for beaches and boats. Leave the cheap flip flops at home. That’s a rookie tourist move. These four pairs should cover any event you’ll encounter on your summer vacation in Italy.

It’s no secret it gets hot in Italy in the summer months. To beat the heat, pack a few of these extras in your day bag:Black Camisole | Bowie T-shirt | White Blouse | Black Oversize Tee | Black Sweatshirt | Tan Wrap Sweater | Floral Blazer* | Polka Dot Swimsuit | Loose Pants | Blue Jeans | Black Trousers | Striped Skirt | Black Dress | Shirt Dress | Dark Scarf | Light Scarf | Straw Hat | Sunglasses | Striped Espadrille Flats | White Sneakers | Brown Sandals | Large Circle Purse | Brown Small Purse |

What To Wear In Italy In Summer

Over the last two months I have been flooded with packing list requests, which makes sense because summer is almost here and tourism/vacation season is abound and everyone is looking for a travel capsule wardrobe.

How

This means that I get numerous requests for the same destination during the same time period, which makes it impossible for me to do that many separate lists to the same destination.

It wouldn’t really make sense for me to either because it would be really repetitious. I know that each request comes fine-tuned with personal tastes, styles, colour preferences, and I try really hard to incorporate all that into each travel capsule.

But in order for me to get some of these done on time, I am going to have to combine some destinations that are similar climates for the same time period.

This week I had 9 requests for Italy in July/August and 3 requests for Sicily for the same time. And although I won’t be able to get each one personalized I hope that you can use the ideas as a template and include the colours and details that you prefer.

I decided to label this one What to Pack for Salerno, Italy for two reasons: 1. I don’t think I have ever made a Salerno destination list (If I have it was a long time ago), and 2. Salerno is the city in which the main character of a Medieval mystery book series I love is from.
