For most of us Aussies, the closest we’ve come to a summer camp is watching it play out in movies like the

And well, it’s big business. In America, around 11 million children attend a structured camp stay during the school summer holiday. In fact, it’s an $18 billion business in the States.

But while it’s easy to get bogged down in big numbers, the reality is that research shows that American children have strived at camps where the focus is on nature and the outdoors.

Summer camps in Australia aren’t as hardcore as those in America which usually run for three months during the summer months. Instead, the camps now being offered here are usually a week or so, where children live on-site and are plunged back into nature with a range of activities.

Different camps cater to different ages and some cater to different hobbies, like horse riding and surfing.  But they all have a focus on being outdoors and encouraging friendships outside a child’s normal environment.

Best of all, most don’t allow any electronics so children are asked to leave their mobiles and tablets at home with their parents. After all, there’s perhaps nothing so distinctly anti-outdoorsy as an iPhone.

There’s a two-forked reason why camps are beneficial. Children dive into a different environment and while their days are structured, the focus is on fun which magically covers up the fact that they are learning things like team work and social skills.

And for most parents, the summer holidays can be a bit of challenge. Children get bored easily and need a lot of fresh activities to keep them busy and that can, at times, be hard going over a six week period. It’s also a cheaper alternative to a family holiday for those who don’t have the budget for a big getaway.

When it comes to your child’s safety, these camps really ensure that its at the heart of the experience. But there’s one issue that some children might face and that’s separation anxiety. But if you have a shy first timer, just let the leader know they might need regular check-ins.
